Spirit Work

The subject of Spirit Work is vast to say the very least and it requires a great deal of respect honour and reverence. The pursuit of a definition is improbably due to the breath of information and cross-cultural practices that influence the term as a whole. After all we are talking about Spirit here and that in itself is a illusive concept. Nevertheless I shall persevere with my own interpretation of Spirit Work and preface any ensuing statements as thus,

“These are my own personal opinions based on my personal life experiences and independent study of the matter at hand”.

The practice of Spirit Work is one that is rooted in both nature and the realm of the gods and has intrigued, fascinated and down right terrified many for quite some time now. My own experiences of Spirit Work come directly from my upbringing, specifically the Centro Espirita São João Batista located in Coelho Neto, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. That was were I grew up. In a big old house with my three sisters, overbearing mother and AMAZING Grandmother. My family practice Macumba, specifically Umbanda and Candomble. These traditions originated in Africa specifically from the Yoruba people. Umbanda and Candomble can be classed as diasporic and syncretic. Both Umbanda and Candomble practice every known level of Spirit Work, from prayer to ritual spirit possession and are known to engage with the world of spirit in impossible ways. But of course, these aforementioned traditions are not the the only to walk through the world of spirit. Spirit workers come in all shapes and sizes, from all corners of the globe and each one has an interesting and rare jewel of information that gives depth and meaning to the practice of spirit work from a cross-cultural perspective.

Spirit Work has for the longest time be an integral part of my practices because of my roots. And each and every time I engage in Spirit Work I honour my lineage. The type of Spirit Work I do is mostly Shadowing and  Channelling and while I have first hand experience with ritual possession, I do not engage in the practice unless I am back home in my Terreiro with trusted Ogãs and Ekédis to support me. In truth, the practice still unnerves me and my experiences horsing is not as extensive as my other skills, so best to be careful and honour ones limitations.

My style of Spirit Work is fluid and tactile. It ignites the senses thrusting me into dreamlike state that opens both heart and mind to a world that is both primal and innately apart of each of us. I consider the act of Spirit Work to be sacred and I consider working with Spirit in any regard to be beyond important. When we choose to work with Spirit whether that means to acknowledge our guides or connect with a deity, we step into the “in-between”. Into a place that is not a place and a time that is not a time. Other known terms for this “in-between” states are “Walking the Hedge”, “Flying”, “Trance”, “Journeying”, “Ecstatic Awareness”  etc.  It is a transient place whereby information between the physical and the spiritual flow back and forth concurrently. For those who have experienced an altered state of consciousness through any one of the methods that make up the “Eight Fold Path to Altered States of Consciousness”  you will be familiar with this “in- of the between” state that I am referring to.

Side Note, The term “Walking the Hedge” and “Riding the Hedge”  comes from the Saxon word haegtessa meaning ‘Hedge-Rider’. It is a term most notably used by Hedge Witches.

The term “Flying” come from European Witchcraft and is a byproduct of using “Flying Ointments” .

The Terms “Trance, Journeying and “Ecstatic Awareness”  Belongs to the Shamans of the world.

To enter this state of altered consciousness one must first “Cross the Veil“. The term “Veil” is well known to Witches and Pagans who understand that a sacred barrier exists between the world of the living and the world of Spirit. The crossing of the Veil is a point of honouring and celebration that occurs at the cross-quarter festivals of Samhain and Beltane. It is said that at these sacred festivals “The Veil” between the world of the living and the world of spirit, thins making communication with Spirit much easier.

Extract from  “Drawing Down the Spirits: The Traditions and Techniques of Spirit Possession” by Raven Kaldera & Kenaz Filan

spiritSome time ago, a list started circulating around the Neo-Pagan community, attributed to Willow Polson, with regard to levels of deity presence. While we found it to be useful, we also expanded it a bit to include levels-between-levels that only people who’ve had a lot of experience horsing deities could know. Therefore, we present the expanded list, with apologies to Ms. Polson.

1. Enhancement

This is speaking about a deity; for example, giving an invocation in the third person, or telling a story. Doing this enhances people’s understanding of that deity, their immediate connection with them, and the feeling of their presence at the event. Enhancement requires only knowing about the deity, rather than having an intimate connection with them.

2. Inspiration

This is similar to enhancement, in the sense that you are giving an invocation or telling a story, but the difference is that with inspiration you speak from the perceived viewpoint of the deity. In this case, you speak for rather than speak about them. Instead of “Aphrodite did this,”, it’s “Aphrodite wants this.” Inspiration is done by connecting on some level with the deity, picking up messages about what they want, and then relaying those messages.

3. Shadowing

This is where the deity “rides along in your head”, as many folks have put it. There’s a feeling of them being just behind your shoulder, and able to speak clearly to you (and some may keep up a running commentary during a shadowing experience), but they are not using your body, and you are in full control of your reactions. You may “take dictation” and relay their words, or rephrase them, or keep silent as the situation requires.

4. Integration

Integration goes one step further; here you speak as the deity in the first person. This is generally done only as the highlight of a ritual; one example of this is the classic Wiccan “drawing down the Moon”, in which the high priestess steps forth and speaks as if she were the Goddess herself. “I am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mystery of the waters….” Integration is done by connecting with the deity and relaying their words immediately, in the first person, as if one was an interpreter. It requires a more intimate and clear connection if it is to be done properly, rather than merely narrating the words of the Athena puppet in the priestess’s head, for example.

5. Aspecting

The line between Integration and Aspecting is subtle, but basically here one is a full channel for the energy of the deity, and often their words, but the deity has not fully taken over the flesh body in order to walk around in it and treat it as their own. Some refer to this as “co-consciousness”, meaning that the deity’s mind and energy and their own are equally present and share command of what will be said. Aspecting is often mistaken for fully being ridden by people who have never dealt with full-on possession. Classic New Age “channeling” is one form of Aspecting, usually with dead souls or minor spirits. Many people can aspect a deity that they cannot necessarily fully horse, and Aspecting is less exhausting and much easier on the body and the soul. Galina Krasskova comments about it: “Often at this stage, I find that I am sometimes able to (or allowed to) explain sensations, thoughts, or emotions that I pick up from the Deity to whomever the Deity is speaking to for greater clarification. There are those possessions where I am sure it’s co-consciousness and later find out that while I may have thought so, large portions of time are simply blanked from my mind so that what I think is a full memory of the experience is in reality piecemeal.”

6. Possession

In this situation, the strongest connection of all, the deity comes into the person’s body, displacing their own personality/soul for a time, and speaks directly to the audience or client. Depending on the god and the situation, the deity may commandeer the body for other things as well. Generally the horse’s consciousness at this point is either extremely distanced (horses have reported seeing and hearing things as if underwater or from a long way away, in a very dissociative manner, or the sound might be turned off entirely) or they are completely unconscious and have no memory of the experience. My Pagan group, with its wry sense of humor, often refers to the former as being “in the back seat behind the safety glass” (while the deity is “driving”), and the latter as “locked in the trunk”.

Spirit Work as an art or practice is a calling because it does just that, it calls to you. It slips into your consciousness and you become intrigued. Exploring this topic will take you on a most curious journey. It will take you around the world, to past and present and introduces you to practices that are so rooted in the ancient world that they are mind blowing. Where you go with your Spirit Work is entirely up to you and is absolutely no ones business but your own. When you enter that sacred area of Spirit, then the conversation is and always will be, between you and your Guides.

My Spring Sensation ~ The Alice Tarot

Well beautiful souls, I finally went there, yep! That’s right! I’m, rocking the Alice Tarot by  Karen Mahoney and  Alex Ukolov  published by Baba Studios. It’s my Spring front runner and let me tell you, it’s taking me for a ride. Reaching for the Alice Tarot this aliceImbolc/Spring Equinox season was something that felt so right. Maybe it was the white rabbit, maybe the look and feel, either way I had been waiting for just the right time to really hook in and get to know this beautiful and somewhat illusive deck.

Before I go on and on about this deck I must once again thank the lovely Sunstone circle on Instagram who kindly gifted me this deck and in doing so freed up one of only two top spots on my always robust Tarot and Oracle Wishlist.

Now more about the Deck!

Firstly THE QUALITY! Oh my goodness, the beauty of this deck is anything but skin deep. It is a well crafted deck on beautiful thick card stock and my limited edition copy has gorgeous gold stamping on it which just makes the whole thing POP! And because my alice-4readings room is so light and airy, the sun always catches the metallic shimmer making THIS readers experience, all the more magical. I do love it when a deck maker goes that little extra mile to deliver something just that wee bit more special.

My first shuffle was a little funny, I felt a touch of nerves. Perhaps I let the expectation and hype of this deck get to me a bit. The nerves didn’t last long as I pushed them aside like the big girl I am and shuffled up a storm truly relishing the moment. Those first shuffles of a brand new (to you) deck are just priceless aren’t they! The cards felt good in my hand and they gifted  me with a super smooth shuffle and that is always a welcome treat.

I drew 4 cards for myself jalice-3ust to get a little taste. I actually got a lot more then I bargained for in that first shuffle. I took a seat because I thought that this first draw was something that I needed to pay attention to. So I did, buckling down to do  a little journaling and really look at each of the cards, taking in the details and comparing the info in the companion book to my first impressions. Toalice-2 my surprise almost an hour flew past in what felt like the blink of the eye and when I finally stepped back from my very first session with the Alice tarot, I not only felt incredibly excited but I had also done something that I haven’t done for close to ten years and that is to create a tarot spread…. not just one, but seven! I know right!

As for the deck, it’s an interesting and quasi comical read. It’s straight to the point, beautiful, well crafted and it has a cheeky smirk which is something I just LOVE! I can’t wait to spend more time with it and see what other mysteries it allows me to discover.

So there you have it, my quirky first impressions of the Alice Tarot. When I’m done getting to know this deck (a task that may take some time) I will be making a fun, probably lengthy You Tube Review on it, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that.

Have an awesome day beautiful souls! And be sure to leave a comment telling me what deck is rocking your world this 2016 Spring/Autumn Season. Muuwah!

Creative Partnerships & Witchcraft

I recently caught a video made by Athena the Sage Goddess who spoke of Soul Mates and Twin Flames. Up until that point, I must confess to never having heard of an individual having more then one Soul Mate. Up until that point the term Soul Mate meant something very specific, it meant your one true love, your souls counter point in another. So When I heard the Sage Goddess talk of individuals having more then one soul mate I was genuinely surprised at how deeply that resonated and and how much sense it made. So just like that, that old school thinking simply… fell away.

Fast forward to 11am today the 22/11/2015. I had a car boot packed with Witchcraft. I had books, incense, Tarot decks, candles, censers and athames etc and I was heading to my beautiful friends house to make magick. Our task, a book, specifically a handbook on the craft for our community and the majority of the items I had in my card boot was her’s, left over from our recent Beltane Ritual lol.

Eight hours, 2 cups of coffee and 1 beer later, we had done the seemingly impossible. We had written a bloody book. It was detailed, creative, well referenced and choc full of awesome witchcraft. I was absolutely startled that we managed to achieve what we had in just 8 hours while my youngest daughter who is now eight months old refused to sleep.

It was good work, creative work, worthy work. The kind of work that you sit back and gaze at through proud and almost disbelieving eyes and as I pondered that good work it struck me. Each and every time I get together with my beautiful friend, we move proverbial mountains. It is really quite remarkable. The kind of things we have achieved in our local Pagan community has been outstanding to say the very least. Our efforts have landed us in the News Paper and on Radio doing what we love and that is to spread beautiful positive and inspiring information on Witchcraft and Paganism.

We often joke that when we get together things just happen, they really happen. Our joint ideas manifest in such a natural and spontaneous way that the results are pretty damn impossible to deny. Yep! she is my creative soul mate which sounds weird I know but it also happens to be true. It was a strange thought at first, but then, it just seemed to fit

And now, I embrace the concept of multiple Soul Mates and understand that they are deeply necessary connections that we share that create positive and magical change in our lives and the lives of those around us. They are the fan to the flame so to speak and help to keep our energy high and bright and always moving. This type of connection is like Soul Medicine and I find it vital to my spiritual evolution not to mention the expansion of my sphere of consciousness.

So I am thankful to The Sage Goddess for shinning a light on this new (to me) wisdom and assisting me to change my perspective the way I have. I  love it when I grow and my mind expands and my sincerest thanks must go out to anyone who has knowingly or inadvertently helped my mind to expand just that little bit more over time.

Here’s to our many Soul Mates and the co-creative partnerships they may bring.

Much love and many blessing

It’s All About Intuition

12071028_827390584043033_561467006_nIt’s all about your intuition.

I firmly believe that the moment you step into the space of mindful living where every experience serves to expand your consciousness thus broadening your phycho-spiritual horizon.  It’s at this time that we reach for a deeper understanding regarding the subject of your own intuitive gifts.

Now I am and have always been of the opinion that human beings are all gifted with am awesome amount of unbridled spiritual gifts.  However, not all are taught to work with such gifts and so these gifts grow tired of being ignored. They become under nourished and whither away.

However contrary to popular consensus, these withered gifts are always ours to claim when and if we choose to claim them.

Sure, getting back on this seemingly new age saddle can be a touch daughting. However It’s by taking such a brave step that our world begins to open up to us showing the vast potential inherent in us all.

Of course this comes down to timing. And not all are ready nor might they ever be. But for thoes who are, the terrain before you can get rather sticky.

Que the barage of self help gurus that posses the ultimate answer in awakening our intuitive potential. Yep, sad but true. And vulnerable people fall for it each and everyday.

Now I get it, everyone has to make a living and if your one such individual that so happens to be in the “Intuition Awakening” business, then who the fuck am I to criticize you or your motives.

But if I may put my 2 scents in without causing too much of a stir then let me at it.

Firstly, as far as I know and I’m speaking on a soul level here. There can never be a one size fits all answer to your intuitive awakening woes. Just like there can never be one universal answer that drove you to suppress these precious latent talents gifted to you by source.

The trials, tribulations and trauma that can lead an individual to lock their skills in a box and throw away the key are wild and varied and they need to be addressed ethically and with compassion before any progress can be made in such an area.

It is for this reason that I strongly believe that there can not be a only one way or one size fits all approach. It has to be tailored to the individual. It must take into account his or her heart story and seek to honor that story through opened hearted active and supported listesing.  And not a, my 5 step plan this, my meditation that, my binaural activation this or by walking a mystical Labyrinth to activate the pineal glad that.

Truth is, the process of reconnecting is hard. It requires commitment and self motivation. It is not something that can or should be rushed because we need to “feel” it. It means more when we can feel the process as apposed to being a 3rd party observer simply going through the motions at the hands of someone who is using a “this is what worked for me” method

We need to wade through the proverbial “shit” to get to the good stuff. And that good stuff I speak of will look different to each and every individual brave enough to take a commited plunge.

But oh my GODS is it worth it. It’s so very worth it.  What comes of this type of work is priceless and the changes that occur are dazzling, wild and unbelievably exciting.

I hope this has given you something to think about. Even if but a moment.

Much love

Avalon ☆

Wild Woman

We  have lost touch with the essence of Wild Woman. Sure we hear the word, we hear it like a title said with the same air as the word Queen yet separated from it’s inherent nobility.

We see poems and inspiring literary depictions of it. We may even see flashes of it from time to time in the writhing heaving body of woman in sacred birth space, in the death and sorrowful outcry of a loved one or the purest hatred of a woman scorned. She has many wild faces.

We see it’s packaging but not it’s bloody raw guts,  not it’s  pulsing hot sex, nor it’s mountainous war cry which cuts the air like a blade and brings both sky and the armies of the mundane below it to it’s knees. Dramatic?! Yes…. but She is dramatic, she makes you uncomfortable. It’s her power.

Nowdays, wild woman is a brand, a fashion statement if you will, a means of attracting cash or notoriety. It’s empty and shallow. It’s the lost art of being free or at the very least unapologetic. It has become watered down, redused if you will to a good “fuck off” or face slap or less violently put a solid “No” without the need to explain why. Is this really our Wild Womans powerful legacy??? Surely not.

Wild Woman has always lived in the deeds. In the marriage between rage and impulse. In the unquenchable thirst for vengeance or victory. That restless thing that causes our feet to itch, our heart to race, adrenaline to surge and risks our manogamy causing us to rage against the stiffling social confines of normality.

The pages of history are littered with the examples of Wild Woman but our modern world… not so much.

Instead today we see the illusion of it, we see it’s  hollow shell. We see the tamed woman hiding behind a sea of plastic and pathetic excuses, tucked quietly there behind fear and layers of self sabotage, weakness and societal bounderies. Dying little by little in the should haves and the could haves that pulls at us in the stillness of the night. I belive they call that regret.

We see products aimed at our Wild Woman at hiding or minimising the very wrinkles that time has gifted woman for living this human experience and the embodiment of the Sacred Feminine. Each wrinkle and line the very proof that we haved indeed lived. We see lotions and balms and organic vegan time reversals aimed at concealing the very byproduct of life and it’s variouse stages. It’s sad.

We see a materialistic world hell bent on youth and youthful appearance rather than the noble honouring of woman through her many transitions.

A photo, costume or arse shaking video doesn’t a wild woman make. It’s in the deeds. It always had been.

Am I a wild woman? No, no I’m not. Why? Because I live here… behind these man made walls with the comfort of running water and a machine to keep me cool when its sweltering. I wash my cloths in a washing machine and sleep on a bed adorned in Egyptian cotton sheets.

But at night when my babies and husband sleep, I dream of her. I dream of the sacred wildness and that powerful capable presence I have often felt in times of instability. I call these my wild times.

I think of her often, I think of Bodicca great celtic warrior and chieftain. I think of the legendary Amazons who lopped off a bossom to improve their archery skills. I think of Oya who wields a sword and governs tempests; I think of Eleanor of Aquitaine both Dutchess and Countess who lived a life of adventure thus defying her age and era.

I see her, my wild woman as always living in the deeds. In the doing not the saying in both creation and destruction. She is the ghost that haunts me.

But! I did touch her whilst in Rio this March 2016. I felt her as I entered dangerous neighborhoods and pounded violent steets. I felt her in my awareness as I guarded my body and moved through a culture that has grown out of control.

I tasted her, it was like blood in my mouth as the woman that birthed me raged under the grip of her ugly mental illness.

I have felt her kindness or more so her fairness and I have felt her wrath. I have felt her during childbirth in the womb song that propelled my youngest daughter out into this world.

I know her, I know what feeds her. I know where she lives but am oftentimes fearful of going there because whenever I do, whenever I meet her face to face. A great many things change.

It’s a funny thing

My Wild Woman

“She hisses at me, wild and ferral.
Unbridled wickedness and cunning,
The bright spark of honor in her eye.

She stomps her mighty bare foot on the ground below and the impact awakens something boundless inside me.

She dances and sings and screams for an ecstatic existence,

She is my Wild Woman, my honor, lust, passion, sex, madness. My grand creatrix the muse of all muses.”
